The first sale at Guisborough last week made £2580 for 48 YBs; the best first sale we have ever had in 5 years. Ring sales have brought in £16,460 so far, so in another 5 weeks we should be about up to last year's totals.

THE FUTURITY RACE OF THE NEHU

This year's race will again be flown from Buckingham on August Bank Holiday Monday. 1703 rings have been sold, and with the 5 Breeder/Buyer sales the total money in the pot [before expenses ] stands at around £30,000. To this can be added the pool moneys which will be invested at the marking stations.

In previous years this has usually amounted to around £9000, so the total gross sumavailable for these young birds to win on the day will be not far short of £40,000.

Of course not all the 1703 pigeons wearing FUT rings will get to the race. Sickness, accidents and losses in training and in the earlier races will cut down the numbers presented to the orders of the Race Controller on the day. But enough will fly to make a real competition of it, with pigeon men and women from Berwick on Tweed to Whitby and from the coast of the North Sea to the foothills of the Pennines all scanning the skies to see one of their entries come skimming in.

As well as the honour and glory of winning, so much more elegant Pierre Dordin used to say, there is the chance of winning useful amounts of cash in this race. It must be one of the richest in Great Britain. But it is not a case of Winner Takes All. The overall champion has usually got about £7500. After that the money is spread out over the whole field,so that every bird that comes is worth putting in the clock. Like it or not this is the Continental style of pigeon racing.

Two important reminders; please bring you BUCKINGHAM distance to the marking station on the Sunday, and if you are using ETS be sure to bring a Universe cable with you.
